I am professor of Bioinformatics and director of Bioinformatics Centre. Originally I am a physicist, but turned to bioinformatics around 1990. I receive more e-mails than I can deal with in a reasonable manner, so please be patient. |

Teaching
In the Master's program I am teaching Biological Sequence Analysis (BSA) and have guest appearances in other courses. I am also the coordinator of the program, and students are welcome to come and talk to me about it.
Why to choose the bioinformatics program (in Danish)
Biological Sequence Analysis (2007)
Research etc
In a lot of my work in bioinformatics, I have been using hidden Markov models (HMMs). As a postdoc with David Haussler at UCSC we developed the so-called profile HMMs (refs). Since then I have applied HMMs to membrane proteins (refs) and gene identification (refs) and have worked on methods for such things as discriminative estimation of HMMs (refs) and alternative decoding algorithms etc. (refs).
Now my main interests are in gene regulation, where we work on promoter analysis; non-coding RNA, where miRNAs and structure prediction are the main areas; and protein structure, where the group is working on methods for structure prediction from sequence. To read more about these topics, please see the research pages.
Together with Richard Durbin, Sean Eddy, and Graeme Mitchison, I have written one of the most used textbooks in bioinformatics (Biological Sequence Analysis). This book is used for our courses in biological sequence analysis.
